Therapy for Grief, Loss, and Bereavement in Austin, TX
What Does Grief Look Like?
Grief is a deeply personal experience that manifests differently for everyone. It may come with an intense range of responses, including denial, sadness, depression, confusion, guilt, bargaining, anger, and difficulty accepting the reality of the loss. Grieving can also have a very real, physical impact, which can look like:
- Change in sleep patterns - fatigue or insomnia
- Change in appetite
- Isolating and withdrawing from relationships
- Feelings of depression, hopelessness, and overwhelm
- Increased substance abuse
- Difficulty functioning and executing daily tasks, such as taking care of yourself
Grieving is natural. It’s entirely normal – healthy, even – for it to feel like you’re swinging between two opposing states of being. Some days, you might be overwhelmed by your feelings of sadness. Others, you feel like you’re coming back to yourself. An indicator that you may need grief therapy is if you’re just stuck on the debilitating end of that emotional roller coaster.
How Therapy for Grief Can Help
The grieving process looks different for everyone. It isn’t linear, and there isn’t an official time frame for healing. In our culture, there is a social pressure that after a few months to a year, you should start to move on and get over it. That’s not how it works. Grief ebbs and flows. It doesn’t ever fully go away – it just evolves. I work to validate and normalize those feelings while helping you learn how to manage the difficulties that life has thrown at you.
Grief therapy provides you with a safe, supportive environment to work through your experiences with a trained professional. As your therapist, I will help you process your emotions, develop healthy coping strategies with evidence-based strategies, and discover the resilience to accept, adapt, and move forward with recreating your life. We’ll work towards establishing an enduring, meaningful connection with who or what you’ve lost as you move onwards with your life.
In my training, I’ve gained a tremendous understanding of grief. I have worked as a research assistant under Dr. Jane Milman on a study exploring interventions for Prolonged Grief Disorder. I’ve also received specialized grief training from Paula Loring, LCSW, and facilitated peer support groups for the Austin Center for Grief and Loss while receiving my Master's in Counseling.
